Its root is used for medicine, which has the effects of invigorating the spleen and stomach, regulating qi and relieving depression, relieving pain and calming the fetus. It is used for chest and flank pain, abdominal distension, vomiting and diarrhea, chest and flank contusion, pain in side gas, and fetal restlessness. Modern pharmacology has proved that the effective component of its volatile oil, alantolactone, has good repellent effect, antibacterial effect, exciting and inhibiting effect on cardiovascular system, and isoalantolactone also has good repellent effect. Therefore, two single crystal components were separated from the acetone soluble part of civil incense by Ag+complex column chromatography. According to their physicochemical constants and spectral data analysis, they were identified as alantolac-tone (I) and isoalantolactone (II). It was found that the extraction effect of acetone on civil-lactone and iso-alignolactone was better than that of petroleum ether.
