Introduction: Shikimic acid is a white crystalline powder that is easily soluble in water. It is named after the first isolation from Japanese shikim, and is an important metabolite of plants and microorganisms. For a long time, shikimic acid was mainly extracted from the dried and mature fruit of Illicium verum or Japanese shikim (Japanese anise). In recent years, there have also been reports on the extraction of shikimic acid from the fruit of Maple and pine needles in North America.
Chemical properties: soluble in water, insoluble in chloroform, benzene and petroleum ether. It comes from the dried and mature fruit of Illicium verum, a magnoliaceae plant.
Purpose: It is an anti-tumor drug, and also a synthetic raw material of such anti-tumor drugs as dioxamycin and glyoxalase inhibitor
Purpose: Shikimic acid is a key precursor for the synthesis of many alkaloids, aromatic amino acids, indole derivatives and chiral drugs. Recently, shikimic acid has been used as the starting material of osemivir (the active ingredient of Tamiflu), which is a neuraminidase inhibitor and can be used to treat and prevent influenza A and influenza B.
Purpose: It is used as a standard for quantitative determination of shikimic acid content in the root tip. It is also used as the substrate for shikimate kinase test.
Production method: shikimic acid is a monomer compound extracted from star anise.
