Overview: Baicalin is a flavonoid compound extracted from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis. It is light yellow powder at normal temperature and tastes bitter. It is insoluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in chloroform and nitrobenzene, almost insoluble in water, and soluble in hot acetic acid. Green in case of ferric chloride, orange precipitate in case of lead acetate. Soluble in alkali and ammonia, it turns yellow at first, and then turns dark brown. It has significant biological activities, such as bacteriostasis, diuresis, anti-inflammatory, cholesterol lowering, antithrombotic, relieving asthma, purging fire and detoxification, k hemostasis, anti-abortion, anti-allergy and antispasmodic effects.
