Overview: Astragalus mongholicus (Fisch.) Bge. var. mongholicus (Bge.) Hsiao or Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. Astragalus membranaceus is a perennial herb, which is resistant to cold, drought, heat and waterlogging. It grows mostly in dry sunny hillside grassland or sunny forest edge bushes. It should be cultivated in a cool and dry climate, preferably in a sandy soil with good drainage and deep soil layer. Astragalus mongolicus is distributed in parts of northeast and north China; Astragalus membranaceus is distributed in some provinces and regions in North China, Northwest China, Northeast China and Southwest China. Astragalus membranaceus is a commonly used Chinese medicine with warm nature and sweet taste. It has the functions of tonifying qi and consolidating the surface, diuresis and detoxification, discharging pus, and astringing sores and muscles. It is used for qi deficiency and fatigue, less food and loose stools, sinking of middle qi, chronic anal discharge, bloody stool and metrorrhagia, spontaneous sweating due to deficiency of the surface, edema due to qi deficiency, chronic nephritis, albuminuria, diabetes and other diseases. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that astragalus has the effects of enhancing the body's immune function, strengthening heart and blood pressure, lowering blood sugar, diuresis, anti-aging, anti-fatigue, etc. The main active ingredients in astragalus are astragalus polysaccharides, astragalus saponins and isoflavones. At present, astragaloside IV in astragalus saponins is mainly used as the standard to evaluate the quality of astragalus.
